The decision of the Lithuanian Constitutional Court, which allows homosexual couples to register their relationships and obliges the Seimas to adopt the so-called “partnership” law, is an unprecedented step that challenges not only our country’s legal system but also the very will of the nation. This decision, made while ignoring the clear opinion of the majority of society, opens a dangerous path to judicial dictatorship and undermines the foundations of democracy in Lithuania.
According to the latest poll, as many as 71% of Lithuanians clearly oppose any “partnership” law. This means that three out of four citizens want to preserve the traditional concept of family and oppose attempts to change the foundations of our society to suit the interests of a minority. The Seimas, which represents the nation, has so far resisted this pressure precisely because it knows that behind each parliamentarian stand thousands of voters who do not agree with the legalization of partnerships.
However, the Constitutional Court decided otherwise. Instead of respecting the will of the people, the court chose a revolutionary path – with its decision, it not only legalized “partnerships” in judicial practice but also placed political pressure on the Seimas, forcing it to adopt “any” law. This not only ignores the principles of our country: by assuming both legislative and executive powers – the latter to the extent that courts are allowed to register such unions – but also shows how far some legal professionals are willing to go to achieve ideological goals.
We cannot remain indifferent. If, in a country where 71% of the population opposes “partnership,” we cannot organize and collect at least a million signatures against such laws, it means we are allowing a minority to impose its will on the majority. This is a scandal and a test for our civil society. We must show that the people of Lithuania are not indifferent, that we can unite and defend our values.
We invite everyone – families, seniors, youth, believers, and all those who care about Lithuania’s future – to join our initiative. Only a massive, clear, and unequivocal voice from society can force the Seimas to reject the path imposed by the Constitutional Court. Only a strong civic position can stop harmful laws that threaten our traditions, family, and Christian culture.
Let us not allow our country to be ruled by court decisions that contradict the will of the people. Let us show that Lithuania is not an experimental ground for ideological projects, but a living community that respects its history, culture, and the voice of its people. Let us collect a million signatures, show our unity, and defend Lithuania from revolutionary, harmful changes!
“Do you agree that same-sex partnerships should not be allowed in Lithuania, and that the concept of family should include only the marriage between a man and a woman?”
Why are we addressing Members of Parliament? According to current Lithuanian law, in order to initiate a referendum by citizen initiative, it is necessary to collect as many as 300,000 physical signatures. Given the size of our society and our technical and logistical capabilities, this is almost an impossible task even for a very active civil community. Therefore, the only real path is to convince Members of Parliament that they, as representatives of the nation, should initiate this referendum and give all of Lithuania the opportunity to clearly express itself on the issues of family and partnership.
